Lime and clay based stuccos and plasters have been around for thousands of years. As is typical with most modern building materials we have departed from historical and earth friendly materials for commercially produced “products”. This unfortunately has led to the wide use of chemicals and other un-natural materials that are detrimental to our health. Too often we overlook the finishes that are closest to the surface, the ones we touch and breathe. Fortunately there has been a resurgence of the natural materials; clay and lime stuccos and plasters are among these. They offer healthy and long lasting options for interior and exterior finishes. Another benefit to using these finishes is the absence of the need for paint. By adding pigments to stuccos and plasters the finish is the color and therefore there is never a need to paint.
